Hello Campers! It’s Hi-De-Hi Fine Wine

butlins wine When I was a young boy, I was haunted by the antics of Ruth Madoc in Hi-De-Hi (see picture). Images of Miss Madoc as Gladys Pugh ensured that the WineOfTheWeek family never visited a British Holiday Camp.

However, it seems that WOTW is now being seduced by budget holiday company Butlins after the holiday chain launched its first fine wine list.

Butlins says that it wants to offer fine wines at fair prices and the list was compiled by ex-Harrods wine manager Pip Harris. Wines on offer include Krug Grand Cuvée Brut NV Champagne,  Château Talbot 2004, Château Beaucastel 1999, Château Musar 2001 and Pouilly Fumé Baron Patrick de Ladoucette 2007.

Until managing director Richard Bates pronounces that, ‘Butlins will be the place to go for a good Burgundy or top-notch bubbly.’

Er, no it won’t you silly man. But well done for introducing better wines.

The wines are available at the three Butlins resorts in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness.

Absolute comedy. Marketing genius of course, as until now it’s only been the lack of fine wines that has kept society’s elite from spending their holidays here, rather than the Cote d’Azur. Grand Hotel du Cap-Ferrat beware.

Yes indeed Rob. I don’t want to cast aspersions on the great unwashed but I’m going to anyway – let them just stick to their Blossom Bloody Hill spritzers and leave the grown up drinking to the rest of us.
